What to do after a loss
A calm, ordered sequence for the first hours and days. Safety comes before documentation, and documentation comes before repairs.
Upload documentation only when it is safe to do so. Photos, receipts, and estimates help the carrier evaluate the loss but do not guarantee coverage or payment.
Step 1
First: people and safety
- Contact emergency services if anyone is injured or the property is unsafe.
- Leave the area if there is a gas smell, structural damage, or electrical hazard.
- Do not enter standing water near electrical equipment.
Step 2
Next: prevent additional damage when it is safe
- Shut off water at the main valve for plumbing losses.
- Cover openings with tarps or board-up if you can do so safely.
- Move undamaged belongings away from the affected area.
- Keep every receipt for temporary repairs.
Step 3
Then: document what happened
- Photograph or record video of every affected area before cleanup.
- Photograph serial numbers and model plates on damaged equipment.
- Write down the date, time, and a short description while it is fresh.
- Save any police, fire, or incident report numbers.
Step 4
Report the loss
- Report to the carrier or ask TruvaLink Insurance to help with the report.
- Have your policy number and the loss date ready.
- Ask for the carrier claim number and write it down.
- Note the adjuster's name and contact information when it is provided.
Step 5
Track expenses and communication
- Keep lodging, meal, and mileage receipts if you cannot stay in the home.
- For a business, keep records that show interrupted operations.
- Log every call: who you spoke with, when, and what was said.
- Respond promptly to requests for information.
Step 6
Choosing repair vendors
- Confirm licensing and insurance before work begins.
- Get the scope of work in writing.
- Be cautious with unsolicited door-to-door offers after a storm.
- Do not sign over your claim benefits without understanding the document.
TruvaLink Insurance can assist with claim reporting, documentation, communication, and navigating the claims process. Claim coverage, valuation, payment, settlement, liability, and other claim decisions are made by the applicable insurance carrier according to the policy terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.
