Rideshare and Delivery Coverage

Driving for a rideshare or delivery platform creates gaps that a standard personal auto policy is not designed to fill.

How this coverage works

The three periods

Period one begins when the app is on and you are waiting for a request. Period two begins when a request is accepted and you are en route. Period three covers the trip itself.

Platform coverage is usually strongest in periods two and three. Period one is where personal policies most often exclude coverage, which is why a rideshare endorsement exists.

Delivery driving is not the same

Food, grocery, and package delivery are frequently excluded even where a rideshare endorsement is available. Confirm which platforms are contemplated before you rely on the endorsement.

Who to tell, and in what order

After a crash with the app on, the platform usually expects an in-app report and your own policy expects a claim. Filing in one place does not satisfy the other, and the insurance summary shown in the app is not a substitute for notifying your carrier.

Each side sets its own reporting window, so a delay with one can raise questions with the other. If a passenger or another driver is involved, tell your carrier before agreeing to anything with the other party's insurer.

What the coverage includes

Coverage names, terms, and availability vary by insurance carrier and state. These descriptions are educational and are not a policy contract.

Common optional add-ons

Endorsements change what a policy covers. Availability differs by insurance carrier and state.

  • Rideshare endorsement

Extends personal auto coverage into the period when the app is on and you are waiting for a request.

  • Rental reimbursement

Helps with a temporary vehicle while a covered repair is completed.

  • Roadside assistance

Towing, jump starts, lockout help, and flat tire service, depending on the plan.

  • Full glass or reduced glass deductible

Changes how windshield and glass claims are handled. Availability varies by state.

  • Loan or lease gap coverage

Addresses the difference between an actual cash value settlement and a loan or lease balance.

Who this is generally written for

Eligibility is set by each insurance carrier and can differ by state. Nothing here is a guarantee of eligibility or coverage.

Commonly a good fit

  • Drivers using an approved rideshare platform in a personally owned vehicle
  • Vehicles you own or lease and drive for everyday errands between platform trips
  • Part-time driving — a few evenings or weekends a week rather than full-time hours
  • One licensed household driver doing the platform driving, with other drivers listed or excluded
  • Continuous personal auto coverage with no lapse in recent years
  • Driving that stays inside the state where the policy was written
  • Drivers who can show their platform account activity and typical weekly hours

Worth a conversation first

  • Food, grocery, or package delivery driving
  • Vehicles used for courier or commercial hauling
  • A second household member who also drives for a platform
  • More than one vehicle used for platform work
  • A vehicle titled to a business, a trust, or someone outside the household
  • A lease or loan that restricts commercial or for-hire use
  • Regular driving across a state line, or a vehicle registered elsewhere
  • Mileage well above a typical personal-use pattern
  • Vehicles with heavy modifications, aftermarket equipment, or added signage

Availability varies by state

No-fault states
Personal injury protection replaces or supplements medical payments and changes how injury claims are handled.
FR-44 states
A small number of states use FR-44 filings, which generally require higher liability limits than SR-22 filings.
Border states
Travel into Mexico requires a separate policy issued by an insurance carrier authorized in Mexico.
